The easiest and most effective way to potty train your puppy is by using a crate and staying consistent with a routine.
Crate + Supervision
Your puppy should either be:
In her crate, or
Supervised and on a house line (a leash she drags around indoors so you can quickly interrupt any accidents or unwanted behaviors).
Potty Break Routine
Take your puppy outside every 30–60 minutes, and always:
After eating or drinking
After waking up from a nap
After playtime
This helps her learn where she’s supposed to go before she has an accident.
Nighttime Schedule
Take her out right before bed.
Wake up once during the night to let her out.
Take her out first thing in the morning.
How to Do Potty Breaks
Use a leash and stand in one spot. This limits her space and keeps her focused.
When you first get outside, say your potty cue: “Go potty.”
Once she goes, immediately praise her with “Good potty!” in an excited, happy voice.
With time, she’ll start to go on command.
Crate Sizing
The crate should be just big enough for her to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably.
If it’s too large, she may try to potty in one corner and sleep in the other.
The Goal
The goal is to prevent accidents, not just react to them. By sticking to a routine and watching closely, your puppy will quickly learn where she’s supposed to go.
